Penny Lawrence
Senior Lecturer and Programme Leader MA Early Childhood Studies,
The University of Roehampton
I am currently researching young children's responses to the built environment in London and Southampton. It is based on my work running video documentation in the world-leading Reggio Emilia Approach, Italy which practises a listening pedagogy. My previous projects include 'Dialogues with places', ‘Dialogues with materials’, and ‘The Unexpected City Awaits’ looking at children’s early childhood education as part of belonging in their community. My doctoral research included children's responses to nursery outdoor spaces. I'm a teacher, and a BBC documentary-maker with many years filming on location to share children’s lives in the tummies of ‘Teletubbies’. I consult now on CBeebies. I research using video and photos as a basis for children's reflections and have participants' permission to share these within my presentations. I lead the MA degree in Early Childhood Studies at The University of Roehampton, London.
