Masterclass: Supporting communication and language needs of all children

Language skills are critical to a child’s all-round development, and a primary aim of the revised EYFS is to ‘improve outcomes at age five, particularly in early language and literacy’. Yet speech, language and communication needs were already the most common type of educational need pre-pandemic, and evidence suggests the incidence increased during lockdown, as children were deprived of the everyday experiences and conversations that are so essential to early language development.

This masterclass will look at:

  • the importance of communication and language skills to a child’s holistic development
  • strategies for supporting children’s communication and language
  • why language support also requires practitioners to think holistically and address issues such as child well-being and adult perceptions of children with SEND
  • common indicators of speech and language problems and how to respond

  • how a borough-wide project in Newham offered support strategies that improved the language skills of all children – not just those with language delay and speech problems, built practitioner confidence and improved the referral process

Explore why effective support requires practitioners to:
  • address their perceptions about SEND including deficit attitudes towards diverse child development 
  • look beyond the purely cognitive skills within language development and plan holistically, taking account of children’s neurodiversity, social experiences, emotional well-being and the Characteristics of Effective Teaching and Learning.
